IEAM in El Independiente: Algeria, migration and energy

Pablo del Cerro’s report in El Independiente draws on IEAM’s analysis to explain Algeria’s role between the Sahel, the Maghreb and Europe. Rather than treating the country as a transit corridor alone, IEAM highlights its overlapping roles as a labour destination, refuge, transit territory and departure point for Spain.

The report connects controls along Algeria’s southern borders with changing routes across the western Mediterranean. Pressure on land corridors and expulsions towards the south do not necessarily end mobility: they can redirect it, increase people’s vulnerability and change departure points towards the Balearic Islands and mainland Spain.

Migration is also placed in a diplomatic and energy context, including cooperation between Italy and Algeria and the renewal of dialogue between Madrid and Algiers. IEAM’s contribution underlines the need to examine border controls alongside bilateral relations, conditions in transit countries and the protection of people on the move.
