The Spanish Institute for Migration Studies (IEAM) is an independent think tank based in Spain that works through a collaborative network, fostering dialogue among researchers, public institutions, businesses, and civil society in Spain, Europe, and Africa. We safeguard Spain’s interests through rigorous analysis, the promotion of innovative policies, and dialogue, aiming for a sustainable and humane management of African migration by Spain and the EU that brings value to both regions.
We were founded with a commitment to regional cooperation and an African outreach, operating in priority areas for Spain, such as Mediterranean countries, while also expanding our focus to the Atlantic region (Mauritania, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire), as well as the Sahel and Central Africa—territories closely linked to migration routes and policies.
IEAM seeks to generate rigorous and accessible knowledge that helps understand the complexity of human mobility, anticipate trends, and propose sustainable solutions.
IEAM aims to provide rigorous analysis of migration flows, particularly those affecting Spain and the countries along the Mediterranean coast, with the goal of proposing practical solutions through dialogue and innovative policies.
Collective intelligence workshops, intersectoral events, both in-person and virtual, involving civil society, governments, businesses, researchers, humanitarian actors, media, diaspora, and more.
Co-creation workshops with African and European counterparts to improve policies and programs.
Multilateral Mediterranean Dialogue forums (Madrid, Brussels, Morocco, Tunisia) to discuss findings and validate them with decision-makers.
Review of regulatory frameworks, official documents, academic literature, and open sources (press and social media).
Publications based on data from secondary sources, surveys, and semi-structured interviews with key actors in Spain, Europe, and in the field.
Comparative analysis of secondary data on migration flows and policies.
Policy briefs in Spanish, English, French, and Arabic, providing practical recommendations for Spain, the EU, and governments.
Multichannel campaigns (social media, podcasts, press) to highlight critical issues.
Advocacy rounds with the European Union, national parliaments, local and national governments, and NGOs, supported by evidence and testimonies.
As an organization focused on migration, we operate within a dynamic network of think tanks committed to analyzing one of the most urgent challenges of the 21st century. Through research, policy debates, and intersectoral collaboration, we strive to develop sustainable solutions that balance human dignity, economic realities, and geopolitical considerations. Our overarching goal is to position Spain as a reliable partner, promote cooperation, combat human trafficking, and transform irregular migration into orderly mobility, contributing to the sustainable development of both sides of the Mediterranean.
