The Mediterranean remains one of the main irregular routes from Sub-Saharan Africa and the Sahel to Europe. The Atlantic corridor—particularly Senegal and Mauritania—is seeing a rise in departures toward Spain and the Canary Islands. Demographic, climate, security, and economic factors are driving mixed flows (labor migration, refugees, and trafficking victims) that challenge traditional management models. At the same time, Europe is aging and needs labor, while Africa’s young population faces high unemployment. Spain, because of its location and historical ties with the Maghreb and West Africa, is well positioned to lead a cooperative approach based on listening and mutual respect—channeling European resources and connecting with its productive sectors that require talent and workforce. Orderly mobility is an economic and social opportunity for both shores.
